Abstract:

Objectives: The objective of this study is to compare the efficacy of treatment of glyceryl trinitrate in treatment for chronic anal fissure with percutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation and closed lateral internal sphincterotomy. Design & Settings: The analysis involved a prospective randomized study carried out at Alexandria Main University Hospital, Egypt. Interventions: The subjects underwent following treatmentperianal application of glyceryl trinitrate ointment, percutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation and closed lateral internal sphincterotomy. Results: Forty patients were included in each group. After 8 weeks, the healing rate in percutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation group was 87.5% vs 65.0% in glyceryl trinitrate ointment group vs 98.5% in closed lateral internal sphincterotomy group. Conclusions: Closed lateral internal sphincterotomy is the most effective method in treatment of chronic anal fissure.
