Scientific Tracks Abstracts: Quality in Primary Care

Abstract:

Patient safety is a major public health issue of global concern reflecting the significance of healthcare quality. The world is committed to achieve the sustainable development goals through universal health coverage. Subsequently the focus is on providing quality primary health care in healthcare settings. The countries across the world have recognized the importance of improving patient safety. World Health Organization estimates show that as many as one in 10 patients are harmed while receiving hospital care in developed countries. The risk of getting health care associated infections in some developing countries is as much as 20 times higher than in developed countries. The harm can be caused by a range of medical errors leading to adverse/sentinel events. Approximately 50% patient��?s safety incidents are preventable and modern health care settings present the most complex safety challenge. This is because earlier health care delivery was simple, ineffective but safe. Now it is more complex, though very effective but very unsafe. Unsafe patient��?s outcomes have serious adverse social and economic impact on patients, their families as well on clinicians and organization. The economic benefits of improving patient safety are astonishing. Evidence based medicine show that approximately between US$ 6 billion and US$ 29 billion a year is the cost incurred due to increased hospitalization stay, litigation costs, infections acquired in hospitals, lost income, disability and medical expenses. The incidents of patient��?s safety are mainly due to the systems failure in leadership, policy & procedures, communication and available resources. The patient safety international goals can be achieved by implementing the various quality management standards and adopting various accreditation exercises in health care settings.

Neeraj Bedi is a dedicated and experienced Medical professional with teaching, training, research and administrative experience of 27 years in the Public Health. He is also involved in Quality Assurance and Risk Management activities related to the hospital management. He is a qualified National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Health Care Providers (NABH) assessor, an agency giving accreditation to hospitals in India. The career highlights the award of International WHO Fellowship in Hospital Administration and WHO Fellowship in Management of Malaria Field Operations. He has published more than 70 articles related to Public Health in different national and international medical journals.
