Breast cancer is a significant cause of death in women worldwide with 5,71,000 deaths registered in 2015. Besides the enormous progress achieved in controlling the disease, breast cancer remains an incurable disease. The present work describes types of breast cancer and measures of prevention of this disease in Algeria. It also discusses the role of DNA mutations in cancer initiation and development with the focus on how the identification of DNA mutations in cancerous cells has influenced our approach for anti-cancer drug design. This point is illustrated through the example of HER2-type of breast cancer. Results from different research groups suggest that DNA mutations targeted in breast cancer may not have a causal role. New venues are needed in order to achieve positive and durable outcome in breast cancer patients.
