Haichen Nie
Purdue University, West Lafayette, USA

Biography

Dr. Haichen Nie is a scientist in the formulation development group of Teva Branded Pharmaceutical Products R&D. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy at Purdue University in 2016. In 2015, he received the Jenkins-Knevel Research Award from the Purdue University School of Pharmacy for outstanding research. During 2015- 2016, he worked in the Preformulation group of Merck Sharp & Dohme (West Point, PA) as a visiting scientist, focusing on the study of salt formation and disproportionation and development of innovative Raman mapping method to detect the existence of low-level analytes in drug products. He has an extensive research experience in small molecule preformulation and formulation, including amorphous solid dispersion, salt disproportionation, polymorphism, molecular interactions, and spectroscopic analysis. Dr. Nie has published a number of original research articles in these areas and has given numerous presentations at national scientific meetings. His research has won research awards, including one of three nation-wide global research fellowship of US Pharmacopeia, AAPS Graduate Student Research Award in Analysis and Pharmaceutical Quality, and International Pharmaceutical Excipient Council of the Americas Foundation Graduate Student Scholarship Award. His overall objective is to apply knowledge of science and engineering to develop innovative research ideas in the area of drug development while continuously challenging his personal best.

Research Interest

Haichen Nie has extensive experience of pharmaceutical product and process development including preformulation, materials characterization and new analytical technology/methodology assessment. His expertise spans from discovery support to developing of preliminary market formulation to CMC filing. His research interests include solid-state characterization, developing new formulation technologies/strategies to deliver insoluble compounds such as amorphous solid dispersions and pharmaceutical salts/co-crystals. His research area also covers particle engineering/powder flow, polymorphism and crystallization, functional controlled release system to deliver different pharmaceutical compounds, advances in process and finished product characterization, spectroscopic analyses especially for vibrational spectroscopy and chemomectrics.
