    This review examined traditional and modern methodologies for characterizing pancreas-mediated metabolic dysfunctions and associated diseases resulting from exposures to environmental factors, including environmental chemicals and nutritional factors. The current status, challenges and potential solutions for using the pancreas in toxicity screening of metabolically disrupting chemicals were addressed, highlighting the need for advanced toxicity screening through New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and advanced in vitro models.
