29 September–1 October 2004

London West Convention Centre, London, UK

By incorporating programmes from three conferences – Clinical Information and Electronic Records 2004, eHealth 2004 and a special Leadership Summit organised by the NHS Confederation and the eHealth Initiative – this three day event provides a unique insight into the most pertinent health technology issues affecting healthcare professionals on both a world-wide and local scale.

Key global issues will primarily be covered on the opening day of the event at the LIGHT Leadership Summit, whilst day two and three focus on key clinical and patient empowerment issues, concentrating on the importance of ensuring systems are appropriate to the demands of everyday practice.

The combination of sessions will enable you to choose from a range of topics which can be mixed and matched according to your interest, role and level of responsibility. And in keeping with the event’s emphasis on the practical application of technology to support tangible improvements in care, it will conclude with a debate focusing on the most up to date evidence surrounding the impact of IT systems on healthcare outcomes and cost.

Making Health Care Safer 2004

21–22 October 2004

Royal College of Physicians of London, UK

Conference aims

Patient safety should be foremost in the minds of everyone involved in patient care. Despite its importance preventable patient harm is very common but poorly understood. The only way to improve the situation is to understand why mistakes happen, design better systems and teach the basics of safer care. The goal must be to promote a culture of safety in health care.

This conference brings together experts in patient safety and those who wish to learn. It is divided into four main areas each occupying half a day. These are:

• Systems and culture – Richard Lilford

• Audit and reporting – Paul Barach

• Regulatory and legal aspects – Roger Hall

• Learning and training: teaching patient safety – Allen Hutchinson

The aim of this conference is to provide a forum to

• Promote the use of appropriate adult learning skills and tools.

• Raise the awareness of nationwide patient safety initiatives.

• Find solutions to the key patient safety problems facing frontline health care professionals.

• Provide a platform through which success stories can be shared with others.

Who should attend?

The conference is open to all and will appeal to doctors, nurses, pharmacists, allied healthcare professionals, patient safety officers, risk managers, educators, patients and their representatives, regulators, medical device manufacturers and healthcare leaders.

RISK 2004

3–4 November 2004

Church House, Westminster, London, UK

In an environment as highly pressured and complex as the NHS, improving patient safety is one of the biggest challenges surrounding a healthcare professional’s everyday practice. This makes the routine assessment of potential risks, a well established system of clinical incident reporting and comprehensive root cause analysis procedures, fundamental to ensuring that risks to patients are kept to a minimum. Only then can potential accidents be prevented and the chances of incidents recurring be significantly reduced.

With much progress being made in this crucial area, every organisation should now be moving away from a ‘blame culture’ to one where lessons are learned from mistakes, and where both patients and healthcare professionals benefit from a safer and more cost effective service, centred around user needs.

Now in its fifth year, this annual conference will continue, through a series of ground level case studies and presentations from primary, secondary and community care, to report on and examine the realities of implementing clinical risk strategies and initiatives in organisations all over the UK.

In addition to 30 presentations, interactive sessions and case studies, this year’s event has an extended workshop programme covering some of the most pertinent topics in risk management today – you simply mix and match the sessions according to your specific interest areas.
