Biography

I am the Medical Director of the Substance Abuse Treatment Unit (SATU) at the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC)/ Yale University. My job involves treatment of patients, medical and residency education and pharmacological interventions research. SATU provides state-of-the-art services for the evaluation and treatment of substance use and psychiatric disorders and conducts clinical research aimed at developing innovative treatments for addictive disorders. I oversee the clinical, research and educational programs. As the medical director/attending psychiatrist at SATU, I currently oversee the care of over 250 individuals with addictive disorders. I provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for patients with severe psychiatric and addictive disorders in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team comprising of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, trainees, research and other supportive staff. I provide consultation and treatment for patients referred from the New Haven judicial system, the Yale New Haven Hospital, the Connecticut Mental Health Center and most of the greater New Haven mental health programs. I carry out triage assessments, treatment planning, dispositions and provide treatment team leadership. As the Study Physician at this Yale University Research Center, I am involved in protocol development along with medical management and evaluation of research participants in multiple concurrent studies. Prior to joining SATU I worked as the attending physician and medical director of the dual diagnosis inpatient service at Yale Psychiatric Hospital. I also worked as the Associate Medical Director of the Yale Psychiatric Hospital for three years. During that assignment, for a period of four months, I worked as the Acting Medical Director of the hospital. Prior to joining the Yale department of psychiatry faculty I completed addiction psychiatry fellowship at Yale University and residency training at Drexel University. I also pursued Master?s program in Public Health at West Virginia University. I have board certification in both General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry. I am interested in investigating and disseminating optimal pharmacotherapies for the treatment of opioid, tobacco and alcohol use disorders. I have extensive experience in implementing programs to provide comprehensive treatment for individuals with Opiate use disorders which include medication assisted treatment and overdose prevention. I led the Behavioral Health Advisory Council which involved patients and family members in the planning, delivery and evaluation of health care provided at Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital. I have extensive experience in implementing programs to promote patient and family centered care.
