Abstract

Role of Microwave assisted treatments in the extraction of Flax seed oil from Linum usitatissimum.

M.P.Kusuma

The present study suggests that microwave assisted extraction treatments  increased  the concentration of linseed oil when subjected  to a frequency of 2450MHZ for a duration of 5min and 10min. The concentration of unsaturated fatty acids like linoleic acid , α -methyl linolenate and 13-Tetradece11-yn-1-ol was marginally increased when subjected to microwave treatment of 5min compared to conventional extraction methods. With increase in the microwave assisted time of 10min, the concentration of unsaturated fattyacids decreased with accumulation of oxidized products. Results indicate that concentration of fatty acids extracted from linseed oil can be improved by microwave assisted treatments. Effect of linseed oil on blood clotting behavior was also studied and it was observed that there was prolongation of clotting time.
