Abstract

Evaluation of Serum Lipid Profile of Bullmastiff Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris).

Chuku L.C.1 and Nnamdi Chinaka2*

The study evaluated the serum lipid profile of Bullmastiff dogs (Canis lupus familiaris). A total of sixty Bullmastiff dogs comprising of thirty males and thirty females were adopted for this study and their respective body weight (bw), age and gender were obtained. Analytical grade reagents and lipid profile kit were used, and standard spectrophotometric method was adopted for the biochemical analysis. Statistics and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for mean ± standard deviation (mean±SD) and comparison of mean by means of least significant difference (LSD) was conducted using statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. Results obtained from serum lipid profile for the determination of total cholesterols (TC), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) indicated that the male dogs (MBD) had an elevated level of TC, HDL-C and LDL-C when compared with the females (FBD) and these differences were significant (p<0.05).
