Abstract

A Review on Cattle Fasciolosis

Akinaw Wagari

Bovine fasciolosis is a ??r?Ɛŝ?c disease of c?Ʃů? caused by trematodes usually Fasciola ŐŝŐ?n?c??n? Fasciola ?????c? in the tropics. The members of this genus are commonly known as liver ?ƵŬ?Ɛ? The life cycle of these trematodes involves snail as an intermediate host (IH). The disease is found in vast water lodged and marshy grazing Į?ů? cŽn?ŝ?Žn ?n?cŝ????? to be ideal for the ?rŽ??Ő??Žn and maintenance of high prevalence of fasciolosis. This disease is widely distributed in areas where c?Ʃů? are raised and there is a niche for Lymnaeid snail. The disease is usually characterized by a chronic, ƐŽm??m?Ɛ acute or sub-acute ŝn??mm??Žn of the liver and bile ducts, accompanied by sub-mandibular oedema, anaemia, anorexia, general ŝn?Žxŝc??Žn and death. It is an important ůŝmŝ?nŐ factor for bovine ?rŽ?Ƶc?Žn? It causes several economic losses. The losses may be direct or indirect. The ?ƵŬ?Ɛ cause severe liver damage and result in total cŽn??mn??Žn of liver. Diagnosis of bovine fasciolosis is based on clinical sign, grazing history, seasonal occurrence, ?x?mŝn??Žn of faces by laboratory tests and post-mortem ?x?mŝn??Žn? In c?Ʃů?? chronic form of the disease is more common and drugs like rafoxanide and nitroxynil other than triclabendazole are more ?ī?c?v?? The disease can be controlled by reducing the ?Ž?Ƶů??Žn of the intermediate host or by using ?n???ůmŝn?cƐ?
